The Best Things to do in Indianapolis

By Ananya Bakshi

Indianapolis might be known for fast cars and cornfields, but there's a lot more going on in the Circle City. Whether you're here for a quick visit or settling in for a while, these five activities will help you make the most of your time—and maybe even surprise you along the way.

1. Visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway

You can’t come to Indy and skip the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Even if you’re not a racing fan, the sheer size of this place will leave you in awe. Take a lap around the track (don’t worry, they’ll let you use a bus) and then pop into the Hall of Fame Museum to see some of the most famous cars in racing history. Trust me, it’s worth the trip, if only to say you’ve been where legends are made.

2. Visit the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields

Newfields isn’t just an art museum; it’s an experience. You’ll find everything from classic works to contemporary installations, and the surrounding gardens are perfect for a leisurely walk or an Instagram photo that will make your friends jealous. Don’t miss The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park, where you can take in yoga classes, explore 100 acres of woodlands, wetlands, and meadows dotted with quirky outdoor sculptures.

3. Explore the Indianapolis Cultural Trail

If you’re up for some exercise, rent a bike and hit the Indianapolis Cultural Trail. This eight-mile urban bike and pedestrian path connects all the cultural districts in downtown Indy, so you can see the sights without worrying about parking. Along the way, you’ll pass by public art, local shops, and plenty of spots to grab a bite. Just be sure to ring your bell when passing—Hoosiers are friendly, but they appreciate a heads-up.

4. Spend a Day at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis

You don’t need kids as an excuse to visit the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. This place is huge, and it’s packed with exhibits that are as fun for adults as they are for the little ones. From dinosaur skeletons to a carousel you can actually ride, there’s something here for everyone. Pro tip: Hit the Dinosphere first before the crowds descend, and don’t forget to check out the SpaceQuest Planetarium.

5. Catch a Show at the Hilbert Circle Theatre

For a dose of culture, head to the Hilbert Circle Theatre, home to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Even if classical music isn’t your thing, the historic theater is worth a visit. The architecture alone is a sight to see, and there’s something special about sitting in a grand old theater, listening to a live performance. And if you’re lucky, you might just catch one of their more contemporary concerts or a film score performed live.
