The Best Restaurants in Altoona, PA: 10 Must-Try Local Favorites
By Kelly McMurtry
Editor’s Note: Our hearts go out to the family of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. While Altoona is in the press now as the place where Luigi Mangione, a person of interest in Thompson’s murder, was taken into custody, this article solely celebrates what’s great about Altoona.
Altoona, Pennsylvania, isn’t just another whistle-stop town on the Pennsylvania Railroad. Sure, it’s got history, grit, and enough nostalgia to fill a freight car, but its food scene? That’s a different track entirely. Once a city fueled by the rail industry, Altoona has quietly evolved into a culinary destination where traditional diners and modern bistros sit comfortably side by side. Having eaten my way through the city, one pierogi and pizza burger at a time, here’s my curated list of Altoona’s best restaurants.
The Knickerbocker Tavern
1. The Knickerbocker Tavern
If you’ve lived in Altoona long enough, you’ve probably spent a happy hour—or several—at The Knickerbocker Tavern, a venerable staple located in the Pleasant Valley neighborhood. With a beer list longer than a novel you keep meaning to finish, the Knick (as locals call it) pairs its brews with dishes like their famed Bourbon Barrel Burger, smothered in caramelized onions and cheddar. The vintage bar decor, complete with a century-old wood counter, gives off a “cheers to yesteryear” vibe that makes every bite and sip feel like a celebration of Altoona’s past and present.
2. The Allegro
Tucked away in the heart of Lakemont, The Allegro is where Altoona gets fancy. Chef-owned and operated, this Italian restaurant boasts dishes like veal osso buco and seafood linguini that feel more Milan than Main Street. The warm, intimate space features white tablecloths and just enough candlelight to make your date look like they belong in a 1940s film noir. Their wine list is as curated as the menu, making it a top choice for oenophiles and pasta enthusiasts alike.
3. The Clay Cup
Back in downtown Altoona, The Clay Cup offers a unique blend of coffee, creativity, and community. Part café, part art studio, it’s a haven for those who like their cappuccinos with a side of inspiration. Sip on a salted caramel latte while you paint your own pottery, or just enjoy the chill vibe and stellar baked goods.
4. La Fiesta Mexican Bar & Grill
For a taste of Mexico in central Pennsylvania, La Fiesta Mexican Bar & Grill hits the mark. Located on Pleasant Valley Boulevard, this colorful spot serves up dishes that go beyond the usual Tex-Mex fare. The cochinita pibil—slow-roasted pork marinated in citrus and achiote—is a must-try, as are the fresh-made margaritas. Don’t skip the guacamole, made tableside for extra flair.
5. Tavern 27
Over in Logan Township, Tavern 27 is Altoona’s answer to the gastropub craze, but on the grounds of the Park Hills Golf & Grille. The menu is a love letter to Pennsylvania, featuring dishes like the PA Dutch pretzel bites with beer cheese and a smoked brisket sandwich that practically demands a photo before your first bite.
6. Finelli’s Italian Villa
Located in Logan Township, Finelli’s Italian Villa feels like stepping into an old-world trattoria. The décor is a touch gaudy but charming, with frescoed walls and a faux grapevine canopy. The food, however, is no joke. The chicken piccata, swimming in a buttery lemon sauce, is worth every calorie. Add a glass of their house Chianti, and you’ve got an evening to remember.
7. Jethro’s
If you’ve spent any time in Altoona, you’ve likely heard of Jethro’s, a beloved family-run establishment that has been a local staple for over 30 years. Whether you’re in the mood for homemade gnocchi with marinara or a sirloin, Jethro’s delivers on charm. The space offers a little something for everyone: a fully stocked bar for those winding down, an outdoor patio for summer evenings, and private rooms for larger gatherings.
8. Tom & Joe’s Diner
In downtown Altoona, Tom & Joe’s Diner has been flipping pancakes and serving sass since 1933. It’s the kind of place where the waitresses call you “hon,” and your eggs come with a side of unfiltered local wisdom. Their legendary hotcakes—fluffy, golden, and smothered in maple syrup—are practically an institution. Just don’t forget cash; credit cards are about as welcome here as decaf coffee.
9. Mama Randazzo’s
Altoona loves its Italian food, and Mama Randazzo’s delivers the goods. Located near Greenwood, this family-run eatery has perfected the art of red sauce. The lasagna is the star—layer upon layer of house-made pasta, ricotta, and marinara baked to perfection. The dining room is cozy, and the staff treats you like family, even if you’re just passing through.
10. Zach’s Sports & Spirits
Part sports bar, part culinary playground, Zach’s Sports & Spirits in Lakemont defies expectations. Sure, they’ve got all the screens and wings you could want during the big game, but their menu goes deeper. The crab-stuffed mushrooms are a surprise hit, and their blackened mahi-mahi tacos are the stuff of legend. Come for the game; stay for the food.
