The Best Things to do in Knoxville, TN
By Kelly McMurtry
Knoxville is a vibrant city full of surprises, where Southern hospitality meets an adventurous spirit. Whether you’re here for the history, the nature, or just a good time, Knoxville offers plenty of unique experiences that capture the essence of the city.
1. Ijams Nature Center
If you’re in the mood to escape the urban hustle, Ijams Nature Center is the place to go. Just a few miles from downtown, it offers miles of hiking and biking trails, plus paddleboarding on Mead’s Quarry Lake. It’s the kind of spot where you can lose track of time watching turtles or just soaking in the beauty of East Tennessee without a care in the world.
2. The Sunsphere
Yes, it’s a giant golden orb on stilts, and yes, you absolutely should go. The Sunsphere is Knoxville’s claim to fame from the 1982 World’s Fair, and heading up to the observation deck gives you the best view of the city (and the mountains beyond). The fact that it feels a little retro just adds to the fun—it’s like Knoxville’s very own time machine to the '80s.
3. The Knoxville Museum of Art
The Knoxville Museum of Art is a compact but thoughtful space celebrating regional art. "Cycle of Life," a massive glass installation by Richard Jolley, is worth the visit alone. Plus, admission is free, so you can save your cash for more pressing Knoxville matters—like barbecue or bourbon.
4. Zoo Knoxville
When’s the last time you saw a red panda? Zoo Knoxville is home to some of the most adorable creatures around, and the conservation efforts here are world-class. Whether you’re with kids or just a fan of fuzzy animals, you’ll want to carve out a few hours for a stroll among the giraffes, elephants, and (yes) those red pandas.
5. The Vault
For a nightlife option that feels very Knoxville, head to The Vault, a cozy, intimate speakeasy-style bar hidden beneath Market Square. It’s the perfect place to end your day with a craft cocktail or two, in a setting that feels miles away from the bustle above ground.
